Street Level Cycles

Bicycle education, repair, and reuse

About the Program

Street Level Cycles is a full service bike shop that also serves as our bicycle education, repair, and reuse program. Working alongside skilled instructors, our youth interns learn professional bike repair by refurbishing used bicycles, which are distributed back to the community as affordable, sustainable transportation. Youth also help community members fix their own bicycles in our do-it-yourself Open Shop workspace. Each year, with the support of our interns, we refurbish, reuse, or recycle over 1,000 unwanted bicycles and serve around 1,300 community members in Open Shop. In 2024, through our bike giveaway programs, Street Level Cycles donated 172 bikes to families and community members who need them.

We sell refurbished used bicycles in all sizes for any kind of rider, ranging from city cruisers to full suspension mountain bikes. We also provide repair and tune-up services*, sell new and used accessories, and maintain a broad selection of new and used parts, including high-end and rare components.

Bike Donations

We accept donations of bikes, bike parts, and accessories during our normal retail hours. Each year, we reuse or recycle over 1,000 bicycles, helping to divert around 40,000 pounds of waste from landfills.

Donated bikes are:

  • Used as a teaching tool in our youth bicycle mechanics internship program
  • Refurbished and donated to families and community members
  • Sold in our retail shop to help fund our youth and community programs

We offer donation pick-ups on a case-by-case basis and typically require a minimum of 5 bikes to pick up a donation in the Bay Area. To inquire about a pick-up, please email us with photos of your donation.

We accept e-bike donations for a $100 fee. This fee covers staff time for extensive diagnosis and e-bike battery recycling costs and labor. We also partner with Call2Recycle to safely and responsibly recycle electric bicycle batteries that have reached the end of their lifespan. Here is a list of the accepted battery brands. E-bike donations can be dropped off during our normal retail hours.

Bike donations are tax deductible. Please call us at (510) 644-2577 if you have any questions.

Community Open Shop

On Saturdays and Sundays, we offer our do-it-yourself Community Open Shop in which community members can use our tools, purchase components, and fix their bikes. Open Shop is where the bulk of our used parts are located and available for purchase.

While there is no charge for use of the space or tools, we suggest a $10/hour donation in order to support this community resource. We serve over 1,300 community members annually in Open Shop.

Bike Giveaways

To make bike ownership more accessible for our community, Street Level Cycles provides free bikes for families and individuals. In 2024, we donated 172 bikes, including lights, locks, and helmets, to East Bay community members. Our giveaway programs prioritize marginalized communities impacted by systemic inequalities, including:

  • Low-income households
  • Black, Indigenous, and People of Color
  • Immigrants and refugees
  • Unhoused families and individuals
  • Women, transgender, and gender expansive individuals
  • Young people

Support from our community makes these giveaways possible. Your donation of $150 covers the cost of providing a free bike, lock, helmet, and light.

E-Bike Incentive Programs & Repairs

Waterside Workshops connects our community to opportunities that promote sustainable lifestyles, including alternative modes of transportation like e-bikes. Learn more about our recently completed Berkeley E-Bike Equity Project (BEEP), a one-year pilot project funded by the City of Berkeley Climate Equity Fund.

The California E-Bike Incentive Project – launched in December 2024 – provides up to $2,000 of point-of-sale incentives to support the purchase of a new e-bike. Income-qualified approved applicants (see if you qualify here) will receive a base voucher of $1,750 and an additional $250 for accessories, which can be applied when purchasing an e-bike. The initial project phase, allowing for the purchase of 1,500 e-bikes, has closed and applications will reopen in 2025. Fill out the form below to be contacted about future e-bike incentive programs.

Do you already own an e-bike? Street Level Cycles can accommodate common e-bike repairs. We are also proud to recycle some e-bike batteries through Call2Recycle.
