Boatshop Camp July

Updates / Boatshop projects

Waterside Workshops offers a woodworking and on-water paddling camp for 11-14 year-old students. Youth participating in this fun and engaging weeklong day camp spend half their time using hand tools to build a paddle and develop other woodworking skills. The remainder of their time is spent on the water, paddling Waterside’s fleet of outrigger canoes and rowboats at the Aquatic Park in Berkeley, the South Sailing Basin (next to the Cal Sailing in Berkeley), or by taking field trips to other destinations around the Bay (SF Maritime Museum, etc.). These outings are weather dependent.

Our main goal is to enable young people to safely develop woodworking skills using hand tools and to gain confidence paddling on the water. At Waterside’s boat shop, our paddle making project is the initial project we start with all students so they can learn basic woodworking skills and have exposure to the hand tools we use in building boats in our shop. We run a program steeped in maritime history and tradition and believe it is equally important to be on the water as it is to be in the shop.
