What do bike donations support?

Donated bikes are helping people every step of the way. While being fixed-up, bikes are a teaching-tool for our youth interns, providing valuable on-the-job training. Youth interns are involved in every step of the process from fixing the bicycle, to teaching younger youth, to providing customer service and retail sales during our weekly Community Open Shop hours.

Once fixed up, bikes are distributed one of four ways: through our earn-a-bike program for low-income teenagers, our work-trade program for the homeless, our holiday kids bike giveaway, or our weekly retail sales to generate funds for our free programs.

Each usable bicycle that is donated to our organization is up-cycled, bringing the bike back up to its highest and best use instead of just recycling the raw materials.

Our bikes provide low-cost sustainable transportation for community members ranging from the homeless, to students at local colleges, to avid cyclists and commuters.

Unusable bikes are broken down and parted out into our used parts bins. These parts then provide a low-cost option for community members who come in to repair their bikes during our weekly Open Shop hours. Any unusable parts are recycled.

You will receive a tax-deductible receipt for all donations.

Note: We are rarely able to pick-up bicycles from individuals, but we do provide pick-ups for multiple bicycles on a case-by-case basis. Please contact our office at (510) 644-2577 for pick-up inquiries regarding large donations.

If you’re interested in the mission of Waterside Workshops and want to get involved, we want to hear from you.
We’ve been very fortunate to work with great people and organizations who have added the energy and skills to both improve our facilities and staff our programs. Please give us a call or stop by to see how you might get involved.
